First of the year ultra-muggy weekend
It’s going to be in the 90’s all weekend, with the humidity to match. You’ll want to get out there and enjoy it, but unfortunately there’s not much going on.
- CubaNostalgia — for those who want to see what this whole “Cuba” thing is all about.
- Big bluegrass festival up in Hollywood, with free admission all weekend.
- Another orchid festival? Yep, this time at Fruit and Spice Park.
- HAHAHAHA!! Whoever’s doing promotion for the JVC Jazz festival is getting their ass fired REEL soon — their website is currently down and showing “This account has surpassed its CGI resources allocation at the present time.” Hilarious. You are welcome to keep clicking the link in hopes that it comes back at some point, but I wouldn’t bother — the biggest “name” on the festival is Sergio Mendez.
- Yee-haw, there’s a Miami International Agriculture and Cattle Show. Bring the kids.
- Tonight: Awesome New Republic at The Vagabond [MySpace].
- Les Standiford’s new book is about the founding of Washington as the nation’s capital. He speaks tonight at Books & Books Coral Gables.
- Cuba Libre block party outside The Globe, w/ live music and good food.
- Saturday: Haitian Compas Festival, but CAREFUL — the website started screaming at me, even with flashblock installed. There is some safe information here.
- Elvis Costello performs, which would be pretty cool, but apparently he’s “special guest” of the Palm Beach Police, which is a little weird (I think — admittedly I’m not sure I understand what’s happening here).
- Wallflower Gallery’s 11th anniversary celebration
- Sunday: The Greynolds Park Love-in, with a performance by the “legendary” Spencer Davis Group.

What!? You’re not going to report on the biggest bash of the year in …Kendall? http://flickr.com/photos/bigpinkhouse/2497666662/
It’s Sergio Mendes, not Menendez… And, let’s be honest, he IS a big deal to jazz-lovers, although your use of quotation marks around the word “name” seems to sarcastically imply otherwise. Even his wikipedia page will make that immediately clear.

Also, what’s so strange about Elvis Costello playing with the Police? “Special guest” in this case just means he’s the opening act. It’s a much better deal than the Police’s gig at Dolphin Stadium last year (main opening act: Maroon 5).
beanblossom~ Whoa, that’s a biggie!
a~ Thanks for the name correction. He’s not a big deal to any Jazz lovers I know. As far as I can tell he made his name playing on pop records in the 60s. Whatever, at least they got their website back up.
The Spencer Davis Group was certainly legendary at one time, I hope your quotes only refer to whatever this latest incarnation consists of.
Baseball #1 UM vs #2 UNC, tonight and tomorrow.
Ricky Skaggs tomorrow night at the Hollywood Red, White and Bluegrass Fest.
Pink Ghost:
Mini Munny Show!
Opening night is this Saturday May 17, 2008 at 7pm
Hey, we’re having a drum circle this Sunday at Oak Park for everyone interested. Another one for memorial weekend
I have to agree with CB…If Steve Winwood isn’t playing…then it is not the legendary Spencer Davis Group. When Stevie left the band in the 60’s to start Traffic…they fell off the path of legends.
Just a few other things since all the music nerds are beating you up today..
the Jazz lovers you know, don’t know jack
Sergio Mendes is very important and one of the few who introduced and defined bossanova to the world. Yes he is definitely more pop than Antônio Carlos Jobim or João Gilberto, but folks that know jazz…usually know him…unless your jazz friends are 12 or are soccer moms that listen to lite jazz on there way back from work…not that i’m judging.
…and dude, it is Elvis Costello and The Attractions…not just Elvis…which makes one hell of a difference. Opening with The Police makes complete sense as this would have been a dream ticket in late 70’s/early 80’s, and both bands basically started at the same time (1977). British Power pop at its best and definite icons of that generation.
Diego~ Sorry. I always look at your site friday morning when I’m putting together my list, I guess I wasn’t reading carefully enough.
Paul et al~
Me and my friends are into the crazier side of jazz — Ornette, Cecil, the non-gentle side of John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, etc., and transitioning into non-jazz free improv (Derek Bailey, etc.). Sergio Mendes … well, I believe the term is ‘pap’. Jobim and Gilberto I dig.
Yes, the word “legendary” gets quotes when referring to any band that has replaced its lead singer.
“& the Attractions” does make a difference, and I did miss that, so you get a point there. But sorry, I still don’t care about Elvis Costello, and I care even less about the Police. I’m not mad at them, but it’s difficult for ANY pop/rock act to hold on to non-nostalgic relevancy for longer then 15 years. Costello has a claim. How many others can you name?
We couldn’t get a booth at Nostalgia this year but please support us by clicking on our really funny site: www.mosquita-muerta.com We appreciate your comments and suggestion and remind you that more is coming soon, including videos about our Miami Cultura!!
Regardless of the “crazy side of jazz” you prefer(sounds a bit pretentious, no?), you missed an amazing performing named Raul Midon at the Raleigh. I’ll let you do your own research before you start making snarky comments about performers’ talents.
Hey man, snark of dubious justification is what BUILT this shit. I’ve no doubt there were worthy performances at JVC, and I’m glad you enjoyed yourself. My point was that when they headline the pap . . . well, what’ver.
