Holy crap: The whole area is without power. People are trapped in elevators, traffic is at a standstill, and there are crazy thunderstorms all over the place. Turkey Point is down. I’m pleased to report that power has been restored on the Beach, though, and never lost it here in Hollywood. Anyone have anything interesting to report? Update: Early reports have the problem stemming from the main power lines leaving TP. Update: Problem solved: a fire at a substation.
Update (2/27): So, yeah, the official story is that the substation fire somehow shut down the two nuclear reactors at Turkey Point. 2 million people were without power, mostly in Miami but including areas as far north as Tampa and Orlando.

I was without power for about 90 minutes, but I have it back now.
At first, I thought it was my apartment.
Then I thought it was my building.
Then I realized it was the entire block.
And most of Miami.
And much of the state.
I’m watching Channel Seven and they’re hyping the hell out of this, throwing in that it could have been a possible terrorist attack in this post 911 world.
Then they’re showing footage of people eating in a restaurant without power. Whoopie Doo.
Why don’t they show me people stuck in an elevator?
Because they’re stuck. In an elevator. Without power.
I work in Aventura and no power outages here.
Darn it!
but I do wonder what the ride home will be like…
The ride home will be fun. With no traffic lights. On a bike. In the rain. 18 miles. Big, big fun.
I wish I was stuck in an elevator.
BTW, it does not appear to have been a terrorist attack at this time.
Might be easier on bike. The cars won’t be moving much.
I was out running around 1pm, pushing my son in a stroller and a woman frantically honked her horn at me making me stop. She said “GO HOME!!! GO HOME!!! SOMETHING IS HAPPENING! I don’t know what but the hospitals are on alert! For your son’s sake, go home!”
I saw the storm on the horizon, but she freaked me out, like it was a terrorist attack. I kept running, but I basically did circles around my neighborhood.
Wow Crumbs! What a paranoid freak that lady was!
Killian High School was a clusterfuck after announcing no bus service. Parents were told to line up at door and fill out paperwork. This includes 18 year old students and those who drive or walk home (or take public transport). My husband waited in line and was three parents away from the door when they announced the kids were going to be released after all.
Did they really expect 3400+ students to be signed out one by one??!?
I was in Coconute Grove. My power went out for no more than hour. I really first only thought it was my building (it has happened before), then when I went out to get lunch I realized all of US1 was messed up. But when the power came on and I went on to the Herald Web site I realized it was all of South Florida.
I love though how people automatically started with the wild and crazy rumors. Not at any point did I think it was anything more than just a power failure. People need to calm the fuck down.
I played hooky from work today. I picked a good day.
Channel 6 showing F-16s flying in and taking off didn’t help the rumor mill probably…
Bike ride home for me was uneventful… most people just gave up and went home early… works for me!
Since Turkey Point is part of the focus for today’s failure, I wonder if this will re-awaken rumors about whether this failure had anything to do with faulty repairs done when the stacks were damaged by the direct hit from Hurricane Andrew… which also led to rumors of people dying due to radiation poisoning weeks later, and government trucks stacking the bodies and mysteriously carting them away… What? you never heard of the before? (http://www.nexusmagazine.com/articles/hurricane.html)
I wonder if this failure has caused any “new” leakage… the conspiracy theories never cease!
We were twittering the play by play live. Wish you were on twitter more. What? Do you have a life or something? (LOL)
hi alesh,,, when are you comin up
