Memorial day weekend the wraps-up
Nobody seems to care . . . no press release on the Miami Beach Police website, and the only information I can find is in this Herald article about two guys from Tampa that got popped in front of David’s Cafe II off Lincoln Rd. So the shocker is that with somebody (ACLU observers) watching them, MBPD made about half the arrests they did last year. Hmm…
But honestly: drug sniffing dogs? Is that really the best reaction to hundreds of thousands of out of town people trying to have a party? Hey officer, you see that guy over there smoking a joint? No, you missed it. Well anyways, he’s not a threat to my safety.
Anyway, like I said before: I walked around and talked to people every day this weekend, including late at night, and everyone I met was super friendly, much more so then the usual crowd. I just don’t see what all the fuss is about.

A couple minor things.
The Herald said that as of Sunday AM, there were 692 arrests made in two days versus 864. Half of 864 is 432 last time I checked. Final numbers aren’t in as far as I know, but I’m wondering how those numbers will square with the Ultra Music Festival or other large events that are held on the beach.
As far as what all the fuss is about, I’m thinking the guy from Tampa and the guy from Orlando would tend to disagree with you.

It’s not racism J-J, they bring this “racist” stuff upon themselves. they are the ignorant and racist race that goes armed everywhere and kill other people for fun. they have no respect for life nor themselves. if MBPD made 1000 arrests last year in which 85% were of a predetermined race they must’ve had a pretty good reason. those two poor fellows that died did not deserve to die in the hands of an armed convict whom deserves to die himself.
anyway. I hope that this two poor guys that died change this whole memorial day crap. the streets were empty on friday and saturday for a reason. law-abiding people being afraid thats why. afraid of getting in the police’s way or in the way of one of these gangs. police are paranoid that weekend for a reason and zero tolerance is enforced for a reason. i can give you two good reasons. Two dead bodies lying on the street infront of davids cafe. people didnt profit on the beach from this “event” except some already rich promoters and drug dealers. so NO its not racism its facts. deal with it man
First, do you have any idea what happens when you place 3- 4 times as many officers on Patrol in one area and then ask the officers to enforce laws that they normally do not enforce any other weekend.
You will get more arrest. Most of those arrested where for public intoxication which is still a crime but seems to only be enforced during that weekend.
Regarding the murder…it was extremely unfortunate that it happend but why blame an entire race for one persons crazy behavior. This event has been going on for 7 years and had this is the first time it happened. 350,000 people ….means that eventually, there will be one tragedy.

The poor souls that were shot, were actually the aggressors in the whole incident. As far as people complaining about the police presence…ummmm can you imagine what it would have turned into without it? Over a hundred guns and 10 assault rifles were taken off the streets in 4 days!!!
Quit screaming racist you morons…guess what, there were just as many cops out there for the Super Bowl weekend and twice as many people! For some reason people decided not to bring their guns that weekend?
I totally agree with the last person that posted about the words black and African American….get over it! Whites are white, why aren’t black people allowed to be black? My grandfather is Hungarian…does that make me Hungarian American???!! 99% of the people that call themselves African American have never set foot in Africa at all…hell, most don’t even know where it is!

Miami beach vendors closed their businesses, people did not profit from this. People were scared and annoyed by all of this. Be realistic MKH.

Personally, I’m not getting into it with these racist assholes. If they live in Miami, they’re surrounded by reasonably intelligent cosmopolitan people, and they’ve had plenty of opportunities to be disabused of these idiot ideas.
If it hasn’t happened, it’s because they’ve disengaged their brains. I have no interest in trying to refute a person without a functioning brain.
Just a thought…I’m sure there were plenty of blacks and latinos and yes white folks in town for the Super Bowl, Ultra and even the Boat Show. Craziest thing I saw Boat Show week was a white guy drink a bunch of beers and pass out. Couple of black guys, also, were mellow taking about boats and money. All absolutes are wrong, but I would say a large majority of the crowd for those events knew how to behave and thus a large police response wasn’t merited.
Now, throw in music that glamorizes crime, drugs, infidelity, etc, mix in hot weather, and add youngster mentality…you get memorial day weekend on the beach.I bet the black guys at the boat show didn’t go harassing another guy’s girl..

Is not a waste of time, racist attitudes damage our entire society, and “agreeing not to get along” is not a not an option for people like me.

I can obviously “agree to disagree” about a lot of things; otherwise my body-count would be a lot higher. Intolerance, however, isn’t something I can let slide. If you don’t speak out against it, no matter how futile it may seem at the time, it will only get worse.
You are right that Ban is someone who isn’t going to change. What about the silent readers of C-M who are observing from the sidelines? If these racist comments go unchallenged it gives someone with conflicted views our tacit approval of the bigoted position, and that “black people are inherently thuggish and violent” is an acceptable — if controversial — opinion to hold. That is simply not true, and must be challenged as thoroughly as Flat Earthers on geography.

Offering enlightened view points and using our collective breath to blow out the flame of racism is an important task.
Where ever racism rears its ugly head it should be challenged.
The fight against ignorance is a full time job.
But it is an ignorant view to think everyone can have the same view regarding race relations. There are too many situations and deeply rooted feelings.
banmemorialdayweekend ought to look at the lable on a piece of clothing [see where it was made] and reflect on how many different people helped to make the garment or look at the food on your plate and realize how many different people were responsible for making your meal possible. I guarantee that black, white, asian, latin and who knows how other people are invloved in sustaining your life.
Regarding memorial day weekend. Its not only a black and white thing. Wherever large groups of people assemble there is bound to be problems….remember woodstock 99? I believe that violence and chaos was created by mainly white middle class college students. Explain that.

i LIVE here. and i can tell you that when Memorial Day comes to SoBe, if you LIVE here, you leave town. all the best restaurants close (wonder why?! come on, you know why!) and it’s full to the brim with tourists- a large majority being black. All facts, nothing to do with race.
