Last non-muggy gallery hop

Brünte Klaus explains* the work of David Rohn at the Buena Vista Building. We laugh because it’s funny, and we laugh because it’s true.

The Moore Space’s website would have been good enough to let me track down this artist’s name, except that that particular page was broken. Conditions of Display is a serious attempt at an exhibition worthy of this almost-museum space. But it’s organized around the concept of nonstandard display strategies, which prevents the show from really achieving thematic unity. This, along with the fact that most of the pieces are (worthwhile, but still) exercises in artistic detachment, makes for one aloof stroll.

Dumpster across the street from Snitzer/Bruk. Hmm…

Daniel Blair, aka DJ Hottpants, and yes, I did photograph the rest of him. My photstitch software botched the rest of the photos. (Cowboy-font “Friends with You” t-shirt, if you must know.)

The beautiful people at Twenty Twenty, which I’d never been to before (and which doesn’t have a website? has a website (thanks, dig, and speaking of which, more photos at)). A perfectly lovely photo exhibition. Aspiring gallerists take note: art looks better when you have to climb the stairs to see it. See also Spinello, Brook’s original space, and scores of places in NY.

And speaking of New York, Circa 28 is something like to Miami today what Max’s Kansas City was there in the 60’s. I think. Maybe. Or something.

By the way, this all sucks. There was lots of good art, interesting people, and photographable situations, but I couldn’t get it with my officially lousy little camera. I’m working on getting some decent gear, so more of this soon. Oh and hey, did anybody make it to the Goldman warehouse? Anything interesting happen there??

Re: dumpster. Who tossed out those perfectly good Grolsch swing-tops?

It’s odd stumbling across people I know in the background of these photographs, i.e. Tasha LDLV of the TM sisters in the picture below DJ Hottpants.

Makes me miss it down there even more.

Steve~ Yep. Empty grolsch bottles fetch $1-2 on ebay.

dig~ Thanks. BTW, I didn’t get to say, but your piece in the Moore show was one of my favorites. Kind of like something I’d been kicking around for awhile and now I don’t have to because it’s been done better then I could have.

jps~ I kept bumping into a bunch of people, including Tasha, over and over all night. I have a bunch of pictures with her, but that one’s my favorite. I love what she’s doing with her hands.

    I wish I was there
    I really do…..

    How was Galerie Perrotin?

  6. harumi    Mon May 14, 11:27 AM #

I thought Perrotin was in different world. They gave us real good mango. I like some of works, but some I don’t get at all. It’s just cute, but so what? Why does it worth so much money? Can someone tell me?
Dumpster and trush is little sad thing for the area. I have thrown thing on street before (especially when I was drunk,) but my friend was saying that all these arty people come and make a mess next to people sleeping. I wonder what resident think of this art crowd.

    Bastards took my socks.

  8. alesh    Mon May 14, 01:43 PM #

Wish~ Never made it to Perrotin.

Harumi~ There was a mess in that spot, sure. If it becomes a big enough deal the city should put out some public trash cans. I don’t think it’s fair to expect every single person to open the lid of that big stinky dumpster.

Jonathan~ so YOU’re the one with that weird appendage growing out of the heal. I was wondering.

Any other bars similar to Circa28 worth checking out? It actually felt like a city in there, wow.

I have to keep my corkscrew somewhere.

    Cute = $$$

Takahshi Murakami has proven that cute = BIG $$$$

Friends With You just wanna spread their Love and make BIG $$$ too.

Nothing in any contemporary art gallery or the entire contemporary art world has much usefulness in real life, other than being a figurative psychic bandaid….its all just stuff for rich people to hang on their walls and show off to their rich friends. Its all cute pretty things to distract us from the lovely death which awaits us all!

  12. alesh    Mon May 14, 08:51 PM #

IwIwT~ “Art” is, by definition, stuff that doesn’t have “much usefulness in real life.” Get with it, dude.

If Friends with You were just interested in making $$$, with their smarts there’d be much more practical ways of going about it then by trying to sell art.

  13. alesh    Mon May 14, 08:52 PM #

    Dre~ Try PS14.

  14. knowless    Mon May 14, 11:23 PM #

friends with you started in the money making scheme first; made their loot in toy design & production. (with some trust-fund backing for this venture, almost without a doubt!though not absolutely certain.)

and art is NOT by definition “stuff that doesn’t have much usefulness in real life.” cynicism aside, art “begins when one person, with the object of joining another or others to himself in one and the same feeling, expresses that feeling by certain external indications.” so, quoting the big l. tolstoy art STARTS with communication that leads to “spectators or auditors [being] infected by the feelings the author [creator] has felt.”
if this isn’t useful then i don’t know what is.

    everybody STOP breathing…NOW!

i walked by that trash bin. i thought everyone put their drinks on top because their was a chain over the lid, as you can see in the photo.

My apologies knownot. I wanted to convey admiration not cynicism nor sexiness.
