Haunted Miami

Our pal Patrick Ryel sent this along from his new digs in Ohio: a list of haunted places in Florida, with a very prominent Miami section. For example, this is about Miami River Inn (pictured):

This is a beautiful hotel on the edge of Miami River in the oldest part of town. Henry Flagler and many U.S. Presidents stayed there during their visits to the city. It has been around since the early 1900’s and has been restored a few times. In one of the cabins, there are many noises heard by the concierge and security guards. Many guests who check into the cabin complain about the noises and request a room change the next day. The noises that are heard are part of a series, almost like a night repeating itself at 11 PM every day. If you stay in the first front room, you can hear a door opening and shutting very loudly, feet wiping on the welcome matt and then a brief silence followed by running towards your room and a fierce shaking of the door knob, which you can even see move. The shaking gives up and is followed by the crashing and breaking of antique ornaments right outside of your room, then running up the front stairs followed by the opening of a door in the room above yours. The worst is what commences after a minute of silence in the room upstairs. For an hour, furniture can be heard moving, scraping and the room can be felt vibrating. Finally, the sound ceases and there is silence once again, try going to sleep after that.

Spooky! We always heard the Biltmore Hotel was hanuted, but apparently not. Maybe the ghosts went away?

Add to this list the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, which in its prior incarnation was the Johnson-Foster Funeral Home. On any given night—and some days—you can hear thumps, crashes, and what sounds like machinery grinding away. Visitors have reported seeing eerie white shapes that appear and vanish suddenly. A trip to the former embalming room reveals….nothing. There’s even a strange, barely audible , monotonous voice that sounds like it’s saying, “I am making art…....I am making art…....I am making art….....”

I know the Arts and Culture Center building in Hollywood quite well. It’s one of the oldest in the city, built in 1925 or so, and was considered “haunted” even before it was sold to the funeral directors. For years, occupants reported hearing what sounded like a woman crying in the night, and lights would switch on and off randomly. Then, in the late 80s, when all the slimy spooks and crawling creeps relocated to the City Commission, things settled down.

Several years ago police were summoned to investigate when the severed body of what turned out to be a Federal Highway hooker was discovered in their dumpster. Grisly rumors that it was actually two hookers (the top of one, the bottom of a second) proved false. The case remains open, I believe.

That place is STILL haunted. I did some court-mandated community service work there, and in broad daylight,I turned around and saw this big white shape floating from one room right through a closed door and out. Freaked the shit out of me, no lie. And when I told the people that worked there about it, they just shrugged. They all said they knew the place was haunted, but it just didn’t bother them!

The story about the hooker cut in half is true, but it wasn’t at the Art and Culture Center’s dumpster—it was behind the Pet Supermarket near South Broward High School.

But anybody who’s been around Hollywood knows that the A&C Center is haunted. Poke around there at night, or talk to people who have. You can hear things that make no sense, and practically feel the presence of….something. No wonder they call it “Holly-weird.”

That sounds really creepy and distrubing, too. I hope the hotel does something about it because it may affect guest bookings.
